The 6S method is a Lean workplace organization system—
—designed to improve efficiency, productivity, and safety. Originating from 5S and the Toyota Production System, it enhances safety by identifying hazards, ensuring orderly workspaces, reducing defects, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
- Sort (Seiri): Remove unnecessary items from the workspace, keeping only essential tools and materials, often using red tags for identification.
- Set in Order (Seiton): Organize necessary items logically for accessibility, minimizing search time and optimizing workflows.
- Shine (Seiso): Clean and inspect the work area regularly to prevent equipment deterioration and maintain a safe, orderly environment.
- Standardize (Seiketsu): Establish consistent, daily procedures for cleaning, inspection, and safety, creating guidelines for maintaining the first three S’s.
- Sustain (Shitsuke): Make 6S a habit through training, audits, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and employee engagement.
- Safety (Sixth S): Integrate hazard identification, risk reduction, and safety protocols into all stages, often considered the most critical component.
- Increased Productivity: Reduced time spent looking for tools.
- Enhanced Safety: Cleaner, organized, and hazard-free workspaces reduce accidents.
- Improved Quality: Organized environments minimize defects.
-
Reduced Costs: Lower equipment maintenance costs and improved efficiency.
